WHATNALL, Walter

Born on March 29, 1939. Passed away August 8, 2025.

It’s with great sorrow and much love we announce the sudden passing of a mighty man of God. Wally passed suddenly on Friday, leaving behind a legacy of a life well lived and will be missed dearly by all who loved and knew him.

A loving and much loved husband of Joy, an adored father and father in-law of Jen and Tony, Jeff and Sharon, Stephen, Pauline & Barn, David & Michelle.

A loved grandfather of Tiffany, Rebecca, Beth, Emma, Luke, Adrian, Jessica, Bianca, Jack, Benson, Briony, Harry, Rachael, Billy, Nick, Jason, Emily, Rebecca, Esther and Josh. A loving great grandfather of Mikayla, Caity, Aria, Sienna, Penelope, Ruby, Levi, Isla, Samuel, Matilda, Harmony, Rory and Annalise

His love for God was only matched by his love for his family, friends and the church which he and Joy faithfully served and blessed for over 50 years.

2 Peter 1v4 “For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, in order that by them you might become partakers of the divine nature”

Tributes
  1. With mixed emotions we send our love and condolences to Joy, all the children and spouses, the twenty grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. We were shocked to hear the news of the sudden passing of a longtime friend, pastor and confidant who always seemed to have another project on the go. Yet we know Whom we have believed and have the total assurance that we will meet again thanks to the death and resurrection of our dear Saviour and Lord Who loves each one of us so much. The gospel truly is “The Too Good To Be True Good News”!
Thanks for your hospitality and happy times including family holidays together which will be cherished for years to come.

Uncle Wal was a faithful, God fearing man who lived a selfless life, touching so many with his kindness. We will miss him dearly, we take comfort knowing he is now in the loving arms of Jesus. His legacy of faith and love will live on in the hearts of family and all who were blessed to know him.

We wish we could be there to give you all a big hug, especially you, Aunty Joy. We will be joining you as we watch the celebration of his life from here in Thailand.

  3. Pastor Wally was to us an absolute inspiration, thoughtful, encouraging and caring in the good times and through the difficult times. We know we are not alone in this, but Ps Wally with his loving, supportive wife Joy, poured themselves into us, our work and ministry like no other and made us feel like we were the centre of their attention. They have a rare gifting and we were privileged to experience that. He was a pastor and mentor to me.
I was the leader of the Swan Hill Christian Centre during the construction phase of the church building from 1990-1995, and Ps Wally with Joy, made a major contribution to the building of the church and travelled a number of times to Swan Hill, leaving their busy church, family and work responsibilities to give their full attention, time and seemingly boundless energy to assist our church. Not only that, but Ps Wally brought teams of helpers and materials from the Leongatha church with him.
I wish to convey the immense and heartfelt gratitude I and the people of the Swan Hill Christian Centre have for Ps Wally and Joy’s incredible encouragement and input at that time.
Ps Wally, you have been a good and faithful servant, enter into your rest and God bless you.

  5. Both Andrew and I were shocked to hear that Wally was called home so suddenly. Our deep heart condolences to Joy and the family.
He was an amazing Man of God who travelled far to preach at a church. Nothing seemed to hard. We both loved spending time with Wally and Joy in their home and loved his special BBQ breakfast and conversations we had that week. They will remain in our hearts until we meet again .
